Rotation 1.4 Fall, Harrow

Our first trade and middle-class family in the neighbourhood are the Harrows. They'll be our apothecaries and live in this rather dull brick townhouse with a shop attached.

While I have quite a lot of experience running businesses from my BACC, I usually avoid home businesses, so this is a new challenge for me. One I'm looking forward to.

The Harrows are on the same page from the get-go. They're both looking forward to getting a bath tub.

And I love that cuddling interaction but I do wish they'd be better and picking spots.

Cecil is a 7-4-5-2-7 Cancer, (neat, serious but kind,) and a knowledge/pleasure sim. His LTW is to max out 7 skills which is possible in theory but I think he'll be too busy running the shop to have time for anything else.

His traits are light sleeper, night owl, genius, bookworm, and good.

Julia is a 5-8-6-3-3 Aires, (outgoing but rather grouchy,) and a knowledge/popularity sim. Her LWT is ecological Guru, which, nope. I do feel bad for the ladies leading such limited lives, but after I'm up to gen 3 and finish the challenge I'll go over to a more Edwardian setting with more freedom and opportunities for women.

Her traits are supernatural fan, loves the outdoors, virtuoso, lucky, and gatherer.

Before the Harrows get down to the baby-making, I have them visit a few community lots to see if the witch spawns. Since they're apothecaries I want them to be able to make potions.Their first stop is the park where Cecil immediately does  abetter job of catching fish than any of the families who needed fish for food.

As an aside, I love a small, compact hood. That's the Akers' cottage in the background.

Julia meets Mrs Meadowsweet, the lady of the Gentleman Farmer household,  and the two of them get along very well. I'm pretty lax with cross-class socializing since this is such a small community.

The shop needs to be run for at least four hours every day except Sunday, which sounds pretty doable even with a pregnant wife. Cecil should be able to manage on his own for those few hours.

At the moment the store sells a combination of perfumes, soaps, and candles, and some decorative pots and lotions. Victorian Apothecaries were quite interesting. Since you didn't need any qualifications to run one, they often sold all kinds of random things like condiments and made-up cure-alls that could be downright hazardous.

Of course the witches always show up when you don't want to see them, but for the Harrows it took forever. Cecil finally manages to spot one just before he heads home. he's starving but he manages to get her number before he leaves. . Unfortunately it's the evil witch, but since I'm going for neutral it doesn't matter much, Beggars can't be choosers.

I really need to get a replacement for the magazines.

Julia is expecting their first child. Having access to higher quality items really does make a world of difference between the middle and the lower classes. She's able to do a little skilling on the side, and help Cecil out with the shop.

I rarely play home businesses so I had no idea passers-by stop and window shop if the store is closed! That's so cute. once they get a bit more money they'll have to put together a proper display window.

Trade families still can't sell paintings (unless that's their business, I guess,) but it is a cheap way to decorate the house which looks pretty bare right now.

Trade class families are allowed a few other priviledges, though. They can't hire any permanent staff or have live-in servants, but they are allowed to call for services like exterminators and repairmen when they need to. Which they did, in both cases.

Julia was a bit late getting pregnant so she goes into labour just before the end of the rotation. And she delivers our first baby boy! This is Cedric, who has his father's brown hair and his mother's light blue eyes. As the heir to the family he's sure to have his pick of girls.

Cecil immediately distinguishes himself as a good father. His light sleeper trait means he wakes up every time Cedric cries in the nursery, and goes over to take care of him. Next time we'll see whether he's also mastered the art of putting the baby back in the crib or if Cedric is about to meet the floor like so many babies before him.
